Most installed fences cost $20 to $60 per linear foot in 2026, or $3,000 to $9,000 for a 150-foot run. That range is national. What a San Jose yard actually costs comes down to local wages, the material, how much old fence and concrete has to come out of the clay, and whether the lot is flat valley floor or foothill.
The price ranges on this page are national 2026 figures published by HomeGuide. They are not our quotes. South Bay labor rates, lumber and metal prices and the conditions in your yard push the real figure higher or lower. Last checked October 2026.
How much does a fence cost per foot?
| Material | Installed cost per foot |
|---|---|
| Chain link | $9 to $30 |
| Wood | $20 to $50 |
| Vinyl | $30 to $60 |
| Aluminum | $25 to $75 |

How much does a 6-foot wood privacy fence cost?
HomeGuide's national range for an installed 6-foot privacy fence is $25 to $60 a foot. The rows below show totals by length for an ordinary fence at $20 to $60 per foot. Six feet of solid board takes more wood than a short or open fence, so expect the upper part of each row. Redwood is sold in several grades here, and moving up a grade changes the total more than most people expect.
| Fence length | Typical installed cost |
|---|---|
| 50 feet | $1,000 to $3,000 |
| 100 feet | $2,000 to $6,000 |
| 150 feet | $3,000 to $9,000 |
| 200 feet | $4,000 to $12,000 |
What is the cheapest fence to have installed?
Chain link is the cheapest, from about $9 per foot in the national numbers. For privacy on a tight budget, a simple dog-ear board fence with pressure-treated posts comes in lowest. For a large dog in the yard on a budget, 5 or 6 foot chain link does the job, and privacy slats can go in another year.
Is black aluminum cheaper than wrought iron or vinyl?
Aluminum, at $25 to $75 per foot, is cheaper than wrought iron, which runs $50 to $85. It sits in roughly the same band as vinyl at $30 to $60. Aluminum also shrugs off the long dry summer that is so hard on wood, and it is not fuel in a grass fire, which foothill owners think about.
How much extra does a gate cost?
Every gate is a separate item with its own price, set by width, material and hardware. A side-yard walk gate is the least. A pair of driveway leaves costs more, and adding an operator, keypad and power raises it again. You will see each gate listed by itself on our quote.
How much extra for a slope, brush or an old fence?
We cannot give a figure before seeing the line. In San Jose the extras that come up most are removing the old fence and digging its concrete out of hard clay, clearing ivy, bamboo or oleander that has grown through the boards, and hillside sections in Almaden or the east foothills where every post and bag of concrete is walked in.
I got three quotes and they are far apart. Which one is realistic?
Trust the quote that spells out the same job you described. Line the three up and compare length, height, wood species and grade, post size and how deep the posts go, number and width of gates, haul-away, permit handling and cleanup. A bid that is far below the others has nearly always left something out or planned shallower posts. Confirm too that each company holds a California contractor licence, because a bid from an unlicensed crew is a different product.
Does a fence add value to my home?
A straight, solid fence makes a house easier to sell, especially to families and dog owners, though it rarely pays back its full cost. For property taxes, the Santa Clara County Assessor's Office decides what is assessed as new construction, so that question goes to them.
